Spotify is giving Premium subscribers a new way to influence the recommendations they see, letting you tell the app what you actually want to hear instead of leaving everything to its algorithm.

Spotify's recommendation algorithm has always been one of the biggest reasons people keep coming back to the service. It learns what you listen to, how often you play certain artists and genres, and uses that information to decide what should appear in places like Discover Weekly, Made For You, and your Home feed.

But there's a problem with letting an algorithm learn entirely from your listening history: what you listen to isn't always what you want more of.

Maybe you played hours of sleep sounds one night. Maybe your kids have been using your account. Or perhaps you've spent the last few weeks listening to one genre but are now ready for something completely different.

Spotify's new Taste Profile feature is designed to deal with exactly that problem. The feature is now rolling out to Premium subscribers in the U.S. and New Zealand aged 18 and over, giving listeners a way to see how Spotify understands their taste and ask the service to change its recommendations using natural-language instructions.

What is Spotify Taste Profile?

Spotify Taste Profile is a new AI-powered feature that lets you see and adjust how Spotify understands your listening preferences.

Instead of simply accepting whatever the algorithm has learned from your listening history, you can tell Spotify what you want to change.

For example, you can ask for more or less of a particular genre, artist, or overall musical vibe. You can also use the feature to explore a particular era or type of music when you want to move beyond your usual recommendations.

The feature isn't limited to music either. Spotify says you can also use Taste Profile to influence recommendations for podcasts and audiobooks.

Spotify first unveiled the feature in March 2026 at SXSW, where co-CEO Gustav Söderström introduced the idea of giving listeners more direct control over their recommendations. It initially launched in beta for users in New Zealand.

It is now expanding to the U.S., giving Spotify a much larger audience with which to test the feature.

How does Spotify Taste Profile work?

Taste Profile essentially gives you a way to have a conversation with Spotify about your recommendations. The feature uses AI to interpret what you tell it and adjust your Taste Profile accordingly. That could be useful if your listening habits don't accurately represent your actual preferences.

For example, if you've been listening to a lot of children's music because your kids use your account, you can tell Spotify that you don't want those songs influencing your recommendations.

You could also ask Spotify for more variety if your Home feed has started feeling repetitive, or request recommendations around a particular genre, era, or mood.

The important distinction is that you're not simply deleting individual songs from your history. You're giving Spotify additional information about how it should interpret your listening habits.
