Do you remember those white cables that always ended up in a knot at the bottom of your pocket? The ones that seemed destined for extinction after Apple first removed the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 back in 2016.
For a really long time, wireless earbuds looked like the future. Everyone wanted freedom from cables, so Bluetooth became the default, while AirPods became a status symbol. And wired earphones slowly faded into the background.
Now, though, something unexpected seems to be happening, because wired earphones are making a comeback, not as a niche hobby for audiophiles or as a retro collector's item, but rather as an actual consumer trend.
According to consumer research firm Circana, sales of wired headphones and earphones jumped 20% in the early weeks of 2026 after five consecutive years of decline. The rebound follows growing momentum that started building throughout 2025.
