Lara Croft is returning to her roots in Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, and the latest trailer offers a closer look at the remake of her original 1996 adventure.

Developed by Crystal Dynamics and Flying Wild Hog, the game combines familiar locations and iconic encounters with modern graphics, expanded environments and updated gameplay systems.

The remake launches on February 12, 2027, for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. Pre-orders are already open on selected platforms. Here are five things we noticed in the new trailer.

/1. Classic Lara Croft Is Back

Lara's familiar tank top, shorts, backpack and dual pistols return, giving the remake the look fans associate with her original adventure.

However, her appearance has been rebuilt with modern character models, detailed clothing and more expressive animations. As explained in the PlayStation Blog's feature on Lara's design, the goal is to modernise her appearance without losing what makes classic Lara recognisable.

/2. Four Iconic Locations Return

The trailer revisits Peru, Greece, Egypt and Atlantis, bringing back the locations that defined the original adventure.

These environments feature improved lighting, detailed scenery and expanded exploration. Peru's Lost Valley, for example, is being redesigned to give players more ways to navigate its surroundings.

For longtime fans, the appeal is seeing familiar places rebuilt. Newcomers will get a modern introduction to the adventure that helped establish the franchise.

/3. Familiar Puzzles and Encounters Get a Makeover

The trailer features memorable moments involving the giant Atlas puzzle, the Atlanteans and the King Midas statue. These encounters highlight the series' emphasis on exploration, environmental hazards and problem-solving, rather than combat alone.

However, the remake is not copying every puzzle exactly as it appeared in 1996. According to the official PlayStation announcement, puzzles and environments have been rebuilt to offer new approaches to familiar challenges.

Recognising a puzzle might not be enough to solve it this time.

/4. Combat Introduces a New Focus System

Lara's acrobatics remain central to combat, but Legacy of Atlantis introduces a Focus system to make encounters more dynamic. Players build Focus by dealing and taking damage and dodging attacks. Once charged, the meter allows Lara to slow down time and perform special acrobatic manoeuvres.

The system aims to preserve the original games' distinctive combination of movement and gunplay while adapting it to modern controls. GamesRadar explains the thinking behind the new combat system.

/5. This Is More Than a Graphics Upgrade

Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining, not a straightforward remaster.

Alongside rebuilt environments and redesigned puzzles, the game introduces crafting, skill trees and modern combat mechanics inspired by the more recent Survivor trilogy. Players can also adjust difficulty separately for combat, puzzles, and traversal, allowing them to customise different aspects of the adventure.

These additions give the developers room to modernise the original experience without abandoning its focus on exploration, platforming, and puzzle-solving.
