Severance got the most Emmy nominations last year than any other television series. Ted Lasso has become one of streaming's biggest cultural phenomena. Silo continues to earn some of the highest audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes.
Yet ask ten people what they're watching tonight, and chances are most will say Netflix without thinking twice. Apple TV+ rarely comes up, despite producing some of the most acclaimed television of the past few years.
But if Apple keeps making hit shows, why hasn't Apple TV+ become a serious rival to Netflix? The answer has less to do with the quality of Apple's programming than the kind of streaming business it decided to build.
| Feature | Netflix | Apple TV+ |
|---|---|---|
| Paid subscribers | 300M+ | ~45M (estimated) |
| Countries available | 190+ | ~100–114 |
| Content library | ~15,000 titles | Few hundred originals |
| Strategy | Scale | Prestige |
| Revenue model | Streaming-first | Ecosystem-driven |
Netflix built the biggest streaming library. Apple built the smallest
From the beginning, the two companies chased different goals.
Netflix wanted to become the place people opened whenever they wanted something to watch. It licensed sitcoms, bought international dramas, commissioned reality television, invested in documentaries and children's programming, and steadily expanded into almost every entertainment category imaginable.
Today it serves more than 300 million paying subscribers across more than 190 countries.
Apple, though, took the opposite approach. When Apple TV+ launched in November 2019, it arrived with just six original series.
And nearly six years later, that philosophy hasn't changed. Instead of competing on volume, Apple has continued investing in a relatively small catalogue built almost entirely around original productions. Apple has never officially confirmed its subscriber count, which is itself telling, but outside estimates put Apple TV+ somewhere around 45 million viewers globally as of early 2026.
Netflix's library is estimated at around 15,000 titles globally. Apple TV+ offers only a few hundred. Depending on the market being measured, Netflix's catalogue is roughly 50 times larger. Another analysis, looking specifically at the US library, found Apple TV+ is nearly 4,000% smaller than Netflix in raw content volume.
For viewers, that changes expectations. Netflix has become the default answer to "What should we watch tonight?" Apple TV+ remains somewhere people visit for a specific show.
