Microsoft, in a recent move to rethink how employee feedback is collected, has retired Perspectives, an internal tool it launched in 2018 that allowed employees to request performance input from colleagues and managers.
According to a Business Insider report, "Feedback remains an important part of our growth mindset, and we heard from employees and managers that feedback is most valuable when shared through ongoing, in-the-moment conversations rather than formal requests," Microsoft said.
The decision reflects a broader rethink of how employee performance is measured. For years, companies relied on annual reviews, with managers assessing workers' contributions to inform decisions on promotions, compensation, and career progression.
But as companies adapt to a changing workplace shaped by AI and evolving expectations around productivity, they are rethinking how they measure employee contribution and impact. Earlier this year, Amazon introduced more ways for managers to understand workplace activity, including tracking employee office attendance through badge data. The company has also adjusted performance reviews to focus more on individual accomplishments.
Meta has also taken a similar approach by introducing dashboards to monitor employees' AI usage while simplifying its review structure to place greater emphasis on top performers.
And while companies like Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta have built their own internal systems to manage these changes, most businesses rely on dedicated software to achieve similar goals.
Here are 10 performance management platforms helping companies do exactly that.
