It seems surreal that Apple might actually be making a foldable device. For years now, we’ve been hearing rumblings that the company was working on one. Reports about a foldable iPhone were already circulating as far back as 2021, and at one point, it started to feel like another Apple Car situation: endlessly rumored, constantly delayed, and possibly never coming.
But earlier this year, reports suggested the device could finally arrive in 2026. Since then, little nuggets about the phone’s design, features, and strategy have continued to leak out. And now, according to a recent Macworld report, the foldable may launch in just two colors: silver/white and indigo. That’s it. No flashy reds, no vibrant greens, and no loud “look at me” finishes.
So here’s everything we know so far about Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone.
The Name
It’ll reportedly be called the iPhone Ultra. Not the iPhone Fold, like most people expected. Apple seems to be borrowing the “Ultra” branding from the Apple Watch Ultra instead, likely to position the device as something more premium and experimental than the standard iPhone lineup.
Interestingly, this could also become one of the first major product launches tied to Apple’s next era of leadership, with several sources suggesting CEO John Ternus is heavily involved in the project.
The iPhone Ultra Design

Unlike Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip-style approach, Apple is said to be going with a book-style foldable, similar to the Galaxy Z Fold. Meaning the phone opens like a mini tablet.
Leaks suggest it could feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a much smaller 5.5-inch outer display when folded shut. That outer screen size is interesting because Apple appears to be prioritizing portability over giving users a giant front display. Some leaked dummy units even show the device looking almost like an iPhone mini when closed.
Apple is also reportedly obsessed with reducing the crease in the middle of the display, which has been one of the biggest complaints about foldables for years.

The Big Surprise: Touch ID Might Return
One of the strangest rumors is that the iPhone Ultra may not have Face ID at all.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the device could be too thin to fit Apple’s Face ID hardware, meaning the company may bring back Touch ID inside the power button, similar to the iPad Air.
For a phone rumored to start at almost $2,000, that feels like an unusual compromise. But Apple likely wants the foldable to stay as thin and pocketable as possible.
The Cameras and Battery
Other reports suggest the Ultra could come with a dual-camera setup instead of the triple-camera system Apple usually reserves for Pro models.
Battery life, however, could be massive. Some leaks claim the foldable may pack a battery between 5,400mAh and 5,800mAh, which would make it the biggest battery ever in an iPhone.
The Price
And yes, the price sounds painful. Analysts believe the iPhone Ultra could start above $2,000, making it Apple’s most expensive iPhone ever. Some reports even suggest higher storage models could approach $3,000.
Which means Apple probably isn’t building this phone for the average iPhone buyer. At least not yet.
The Launch Date
The iPhone Ultra is expected to share the stage with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max this September. The regular iPhone 18, though, seems to have been pushed to spring 2027, which is a pretty unusual move for Apple.
Overall, the iPhone Ultra sounds incredible on paper: A giant battery, a creaseless display, and an iPad mini in your pocket. But two colors, no Face ID, and a price that buys a used car? That's a lot of compromise for "ultra"; we'll know for sure later this year or not.
