A 15-year-old Lord of the Rings game has returned with almost no warning.
The Lord of the Rings: War in the North has been re-released as War in the North: Legacy Edition, bringing the 2011 action RPG to Xbox Series X|S, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
This new version was shadow-dropped on August 11, giving fans of the original another way to return to Middle-earth. Developed for modern platforms by Aspyr, the Legacy Edition adds 60fps support, bug fixes, and several quality-of-life improvements while retaining the game's three-player co-op.
The game is available for $17.99 until August 25, after which the price rises to $19.99.
Why War in the North Still Matters
War in the North originally launched in November 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Developed by Snowblind Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, it told a story that ran alongside the events of The Lord of the Rings books and Peter Jackson's film trilogy rather than retelling Frodo and the Fellowship's journey.

Players take control of three characters: human ranger Eradan, dwarf Farin, and elf Andriel. The campaign can be played cooperatively with up to three players, giving the game a different identity from many other Lord of the Rings titles.
The game received mixed reviews when it launched, with IGN giving it a 7/10 and criticising its relatively safe approach to the action RPG formula. Its commercial performance was also overshadowed by major releases around the same time, including Modern Warfare 3 and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.
