Xbox is expanding its age-verification requirements in Australia, with users now being asked to confirm their age before accessing games and apps rated 18+ through the Xbox and Microsoft Stores.
The new rule is set to take effect in late August 2026, after which adult Xbox account holders will need to complete an age check to access 18+ rated content. Some users in New Zealand have also reportedly seen the same prompt, although Microsoft has not confirmed whether the requirement will be introduced more widely in the country.
When the check appears, users will see a message explaining why the verification is required: “As part of our compliance program in Australia, beginning late August 2026, adult XBOX accounts must verify their age to be able to access apps and games rated 18+ on the Microsoft and XBOX Store,” Xbox said. Microsoft has also confirmed that the change will not affect games and apps users already own.
How Do You Verify Your Age on Xbox?
Users who need to complete the verification process can do so through their Microsoft account. Depending on the account and region, Microsoft may offer several ways to confirm someone's age.
These can include:
- Government-issued identification, such as a driver's licence, passport or national ID
- Email-based age verification
- Credit card verification
- Facial age estimation using a selfie
The available options can vary depending on the user's location and Microsoft's verification provider.
