Rockstar Games’ epic western Red Dead Redemption 2 has officially overtaken Nintendo’s classic Wii Sports to become the third best-selling video game in history, marking another major milestone for one of gaming’s most acclaimed titles.
As of March 2026, Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold an estimated 85 million copies worldwide, according to recent industry tracking. What makes this achievement even more impressive is its continued momentum, selling more copies in the last year than in any 12-month period since its launch year in 2018.
That sustained performance keeps Rockstar Games firmly in dominance mode, especially as anticipation builds around its next blockbuster: Grand Theft Auto VI.
For context, Rockstar’s previous giant, Grand Theft Auto V, still sits far ahead with over 230 million copies sold, making it one of the most successful entertainment products ever created.
Despite its commercial success, fans continue to question one major decision: why the game still hasn’t received a 60fps upgrade on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The current console versions remain locked at 30fps, something players have been requesting for years.
Rumours of a next-gen patch have circulated multiple times, but Rockstar has yet to confirm anything officially.
The game’s multiplayer component, Red Dead Online, has also remained a talking point. While ambitious, it never reached the same cultural or financial scale as GTA Online, leading fans to reflect on what might have been with stronger long-term support.
Is Red Dead Redemption 3 Coming?
Discussions about a potential follow-up, Red Dead Redemption III, continue to circulate.
Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser previously suggested the sequel “will probably happen,” while Arthur Morgan actor Roger Clark has said he is “certain” fans will eventually see it, though no timeline exists.
Even Hollywood actor Jack Black has joked about the franchise, revealing interest in appearing in a potential third installment.
For now, Rockstar Games is focused on finishing and launching Grand Theft Auto VI, widely considered the most anticipated game in development.
Once that cycle is complete, many fans believe the studio may finally return to the Wild West.
And if history is any indication, the wait might be long, but worth it.
