Spotify is moving ahead with its AI-powered music ambitions, announcing a major partnership with Merlin while revealing fresh details about its upcoming AI remix and covers feature.
During its second-quarter earnings call, the streaming giant confirmed that Merlin, the licensing partner representing more than 30,000 independent labels and distributors, has joined Universal Music Group (UMG) in supporting the new AI music initiative.
The partnership significantly expands the catalog available for Spotify's upcoming AI-powered covers and remix tool, which will allow fans to reinterpret songs creatively, but only with permission from participating artists.

Unlike many AI music platforms that generate entirely synthetic songs, Spotify says its new feature is designed around real artists and licensed music. The tool will let users create AI-assisted covers and remixes using music from artists who have opted into the program, ensuring creators retain control over how their work is used.
Spotify co-CEO Gustav Söderström emphasized the distinction during the earnings call.
“We're talking about real artists, not fake artists”, Söderström said.
