The tech industry is constantly talking about a talent shortage.

Companies say they can't find the right people. At the same time, job seekers are spending months applying for roles without hearing back. Some are earning certifications, building portfolios, completing projects, and doing everything they're told should make them employable, yet opportunities remain frustratingly out of reach.

Somewhere between those two realities, something isn't adding up.

If companies need talent so badly, why are so many talented people struggling to get hired?

Part of the challenge is that today's hiring market looks very different from the one many professionals entered just a few years ago. Hiring has slowed, employers have become more selective, and competition for opportunities has intensified.

Data from workforce analytics firm Revelio Labs, reported by BI, found that about 9 out of every 10 job postings from major U.S. companies were filled within six months in 2019. By late 2024, that figure had fallen to fewer than 1 in 2.

All of this is happening at a time when AI is starting to change the hiring process itself. From automated screening systems to algorithm-driven application reviews, candidates are going through a process that can feel more opaque than ever. The result is a growing disconnect between talent and opportunity.

That's the conversation we'll be exploring on June 26, 2026, as Techloy brings together professionals working across hiring, talent development, business growth, and the future of work.
