Travel across Africa is gradually becoming easier as more countries remove visa barriers for fellow Africans. Chad is the latest to join that movement.
Beginning January 1, 2027, Chad will abolish entry visa requirements for citizens of every African country, becoming one of a small but growing group of nations offering continent-wide visa-free access. Until then, travelers who need a visa must still apply through Chad's e-visa system that was introduced in May 2026.
President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno made the announcement during the opening of the African Water Forum in N'Djamena on July 15, where he linked the decision to Africa's push for greater integration and the free movement of people.
"Chad is opening its borders and abolishing entry visas for all Africans, from January 1, 2027," President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno said during the forum.
The policy marks a significant shift for travelers across the continent, removing one of the barriers that has historically made intra-African travel difficult.

When does Chad's visa-free policy begin?
