Pixel 8a: Google's Mid-Range Powerhouse

Pixel 8a prioritizes performance, value, and Google's renowned softwareexpertise, making it a compelling choice for everyday users.

by David Adubiina Emmanuel Oyedeji

Looking for a powerful Android phone with capable software that won't break the bank? Google's latest Pixel release – the Pixel 8a, might be the perfect fit.

We've had the Pixel 8a on hand for a while now despite the expectation of the Pixel 8a debuting at the Google I/O 2024 event. Google surprised everyone by unveiling the Pixel 8a a week before its developer conference, clearing the stage for its software and AI focus.

But that doesn't mean the hardware did not ship with some interesting updates. (enthusiasts were not left empty-handed). The Pixel 8a arrives with a powerful new processor, a brighter display, and impressive battery life all at a familiar budget-friendly price point.

Let's dive into Pixel 8a's key features to see how it stacks up against the competition, and what makes it a compelling option for Android fans.

Processor

The Pixel 8a comes with the Google Tensor G3, an improved version of the Tensor G2 chipset, used in Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. With a newer processor, the Pixel 8a delivers performance comparable to the A17 Bionic chip used in iPhone 15 Promax and a bit under Samsung S24 ultra’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This translates to a smooth and efficient user experience at a fraction of the cost of its flagship competitors, starting at just $499.

Design

Although Google has maintained its signature design language, subtle refinements elevate the overall look and feel. The most noticeable change is the introduction of slightly rounded edges, making the phone more comfortable to hold for extended periods. The back continues to feature matte glass, a departure from the glossy finish of some competitors, offering a more fingerprint-resistant and stylish aesthetic

The device is rated IP67 for dust and water resistance with a display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass.

Display

It boasts a 6.1-inch OLED display that offers a significant improvement in brightness, reaching a peak of 2,000 nits. While smaller than flagship competitors like the iPhone 15 Pro Max's 6.7-inch OLED screen, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra's 6.8-inch AMOLED display, it boasts a comparable resolution and adaptive refresh rate of 120Hz ensuring a smooth visual experience.

The Pixel 8a also maintains a comfortable size for one-handed us compared to the Pixel 8's 6.2-inch and the Pixel 8 Pro's 6.7-inch displays.

Camera

As far as rear cameras go, the Pixel 8a sports a 64-megapixel main camera with an 8x zoom. Here, the Pixel 8a differs slightly from its pricier siblings, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro, which boast a 50-megapixel main sensor with a wider f/1.7 aperture and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

While this may not compete with the sheer megapixel count of the Samsung S24 Ultra's 200MP sensor and its 10x optical zoom, Pixel phones have always excelled in computational photography. Notably, Google's software prowess continues to shine, delivering exceptional image quality without breaking the bank.

Battery

The Pixel 8a packs a 4,492mAh battery, potentially offering slightly better longevity than the Pixel 8's 4,410mAh but a lesser performance than the Pixel 8 Pro's 5,000mAh battery.

Comparing it against flagships with over $1000 price tag, the Pixel 8a tops the iPhone 15 Pro Max with a 4,441mAh battery. However, it falls slightly short of the Samsung S24 Ultra's 5000mAh capacity, but the difference is likely negligible in most real-world scenarios.

Budget

With a starting price of $499, the Pixel 8a stands out as a compelling option in an increasingly expensive smartphone market. This price, combined with its powerful processor, AI capabilities, and competitive battery life, makes it a strong contender for budget-minded Android enthusiasts. Whether you prioritize raw camera specs or Google's software magic, the Pixel 8a offers a powerful and affordable package.

Availability

The Pixel 8a is available for purchase now, priced the same as its predecessor, at $499.

Conclusion

In a market obsessed dominated by skyrocketing price tags, the Pixel 8a offers a refreshing alternative. It prioritizes performance, value, and Google's renowned software expertise, making it a compelling choice for everyday users seeking a powerful and affordable Android experience.
