According to Canalys research, the smartphone market in Southeast Asia witnessed a 21% year-on-year decline in Q1 2023, reaching 20.9 million units, making it the fifth consecutive quarter of decline as consumers adopted a cautious approach to spending on consumer technology.

The decline in smartphone shipments was observed across key countries in the region, including Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia, as the Techloy chart below shows. Low demand and seasonal factors contributed to the decrease in shipments. Indonesia and the Philippines experienced market size contractions of 21% and 17% respectively, while Thailand saw a 13% decline. Vietnam suffered a significant drop of 40% in smartphone shipments. Data on Malaysia's market performance was not available.
